Ignite Award winner Advanced Biocarbon 3D is creating plastics out of wood

It’s been just over a year since Advanced Biocarbon 3D (ABC3D), in partnership with Selkirk College, was awarded $300,000 through Innovate BC’s Ignite Program. The partnership is developing a new sustainable 3D-printing filament that is carbon negative, non-toxic and biodegradable, with engineer grade quality. Basically, they’re developing plastics that are made out of sustainable and unused wood and left for waste in forestry. The Ignite funding was awarded to help ABC3D and Selkirk College commercialize their research project within a three-year time frame.

Brent Anhel, Chief Marketing Officer of ABC3D, says the Ignite Program funding allowed ABC3D to purchase essential testing equipment, giving them the ability to rapidly prototype their technology internally at a reduced cost.

“Our success to this point is greatly due to the Ignite Grant,” says Anhel. “The team at Innovate BC and the incredible staff and students of Selkirk College have allowed us to follow through with the initial strategies of our Founder and CEO Darrel Fry, and to help future proof the B.C. economy.”

Applications are open for the next round of Ignite funding until August 12, 2019.
