Muddy Rivers Technologies was awarded $90,000 in Round 4 of Innovate BC’s Ignite program, in partnership with Langara College. The Delta-based company is using the funds to develop a simple and inexpensive solution to remove phosphorus and nitrogen from animal manures, before it’s applied to land. This helps the agriculture sector to combat the issues of soil degradation and water contamination from nutrient overload. The goal is to reduce degradation of soil, surface water, and groundwater.
Now, the company is on to their next challenge: turn the chemicals from animal manure into renewable natural gas as part of Foresight Clean Accelerator Centre’s Advanced Resource Clean Technology Innovation Centre Innovation Challenge. The challenge finalists are developing solutions to improve the economics of British Columbia’s renewable natural gas (RNG) supply chain, with nutrient recovery technologies (NRTs). Over the next 10 months, Muddy Rivers hope to create a cost-effective way to improve the nutrient extraction process for phosphorous and nitrogen using biochar.
If the company is successful, they will move on to design and build a MagPi+ nutrient removal treatment facility in Delta, B.C.
