Smart Port Challenge
Smart ports are emerging in the transportation sector as a means of leveraging automation and self-optimization in order to increase efficiency, effectiveness and security making ports more environmentally sustainable, economically efficient and capable of handling increased port traffic.
A key component of terminal (port) facilities is traffic management where the objective is for customer demand (vehicle and passenger traffic) to be optimized to available supply (vessel deck and passenger space). Anecdotal evidence suggests that the current traffic management solution consistently overestimates deck space committed, which may impact in delayed service for customers, lost sales and increased costs. It would be of benefit to both BC Ferries and our customers to leverage artificial intelligence and/or machine learning to effectively marshal arriving traffic in a more automated fashion redeeming reservations and processing “show and go” traffic. If actual vehicle characteristics (height, length, width, weight, vehicle class) could be captured at the point of arrival and perform near real time optimization we could reconcile available deck space with optimal vessel loading order based on supply (ship configuration) and current demand (vehicle information).
Smart Port technologies provide a generational opportunity for improvement not only address the aforementioned challenges but to profoundly improve customer vehicle ingress/egress from BC Ferries terminals and vessels on our journey to a “frictionless customer experience.”
